Did you know that this "tradition" of vicars and Leadgate's cross-roads goes back over 100 years? As our history society can confirm, it was once common for our clergy to visit the cross-roads every week, usually on pay-day. Sometimes on horseback, in the case of one particular vicar, to usher the men home to their wives, pay-packets intact, rather than call in to one of the many public houses. How times change! We now understand that Leadgate's gift day will now be held in Consett at one of our local supermarkets.
