Valley View House, Leadgate

Valley View House History

A lady rang asking for help in researching the history of what is now 16, Valley View, Leadgate.  Happy to help.

From what we are told, before being numbered 16 it was No 1, Valley View.  Indeed, documents in the possession of the current owner show it was originally called Valley View House, indicating that it once stood alone before the surrounding area was developed.

As the name suggests, this house and its immediate neighbours enjoy a commanding view to the South, overlooking the allotments to the left of the "Black Path" running toward Boggle Hole.  It is in the vicinity of the Iveston railway, long gone, now a public right of way which emerges behind Alder Grove, immediately beside the roundabout at the bottom of Durham Road.

The Durham GIS website, accessed  through the DCC website (www.durham.gov.uk will allow historical mapping data to be pulled up as well as an aerial photograph (last flown 2001).  These are worth printing off, if only intended for private use.  Alternatively, pop around the corner to Allan Godfrey's premises in the Prospect Business Park and buy a paper copy of the 1891 OS - then compare it with a current OS.

When the research is done with, why note share it by adding to our website and this webpage?  Better, why not encourage as bit of collective information sharing and communicating through  the website's comment facilities.  In the meantime I will ask those that I think may know more to let us have the benefit of their knowledge and ideally, if we can, some anectdotal stories and images.

If you want to see an earlier house history, take a look at the Clifton House and Uncovering the Old East  House webpages.  Let me have a comment o let me know you have had sight of this opening message and I will add comments with more info as it emerges.

Feel free to say as much or as little as you wish around the reasons for the research and feel free also to join the Village Forum to send and receive messages related to your interest.  forum@pontvalley.net will reach us.
